It is no secret that the Rolex Daytona is one of the brand’s most iconic watches, particularly the vintage four-digit Daytona chronographs. Revolutionary in its creation, the Daytona finally became the epitome of the true sports watch after a rather disappointing start.
The 6265 is the almost twin brother of the 6263 Daytona; it differs in that it has a stainless steel or gold bezel instead of a black acrylic one. The reference 6265 and the reference 6263 were produced in late 1969 for the 6263 ( first 100 watches produced with serial 2,085***) and in 1971 for the 6265 (2788***) .
Approximately 12000 watches with ref. 6265 were produced in steel, about 666 watches per year worldwide.
In addition to the perfect combination of modern and vintage aesthetics, one of the reasons why collectors are so attracted to ref. 6263 and ref. 6265 is the wide variety of dials fitted to these watches during their relatively long production cycle (until 1988). Dial variations include everything from the P. Newman exotic dial to the Big Red-or in the case of this particular Reference 6265 Daytona, the lesser-known “sigma dial.”
The tiny round or rather teardrop-shaped marks on either side of the text “Swiss” or “Swiss Made” at the bottom of some watch dials of the 1970s are actually the lowercase Greek letter sigma , hence the appropriate nickname “sigma dial.” There are numerous rumors circulating about the letters sigma, however, the truth is that they were a mark used by some Swiss manufacturers to indicate that the hands and hour markers on a particular watch were made of solid gold.
The sigma marks on the dials were not something that was imposed on companies, but rather a mark of distinction that a relatively small handful of Swiss watch manufacturers chose to place on their watches as a testament to the quality and intrinsic value of their components. Consequently, sigma dials are not a feature that can be found uniformly across all Swiss brands, and there are no consistent dates as to when sigma dials were fitted. I have had several watches, not just DAYTONA, with this feature as early as the late 1960s, although the brand was registered in 1971.
This watch is the custodian of one such SIGMA dial , a small detail that holds a big story.
