I often like to say that for me Rolex ended in 1988….
This is because it is the borderline year (more or less) of the four-digit references, which I love.
Today I am going to tell you about one of my favorites. The Daytona ref. 6263.
Let’s find out what makes this watch so special.
I like to think of the Rolex Daytona family as consisting of four distinct generations. The first generation, which debuted in 1963, contains several hand-wound references, including those with the now famous “Paul Newman” dials. During these early years, the Daytona was not yet popular, but Newman’s seal of approval helped usher in a new era.
The second generation debuted more than two decades later, in 1988, and features the self-winding movement and sapphire crystal.

The third series started at the turn of the millennium in 2000 and boasts (finally) an in-house Rolex movement.
Finally, the fourth generation (2016) with a ceramic bezel.

The 6263 differs from its counterpart 6265 in that it features a fixed bezel made of black acrylic (commonly called Bakelite) instead of steel.
For Rolex enthusiasts, the most important feature of many vintage watches is the dial, and the reference 6263 does not depart from this rule, in fact it reinforces it. A number of dial variants were fitted during its production cycle, some rarer than others, but each nonetheless incredibly collectible. Simplifying, among the most valuable are the dials nicknamed Newman, then the Sigma dial with the Greek Sigma “σ” printed on either side of the “SWISS MADE T” inscription, and the Big Red dial featuring a red Daytona logo above the counter at six o’clock..
In any case, reference 6263 requires a very significant investment.

There is no denying that the Daytona ref. 6263 is a truly extraordinary vintage Rolex, complete with a rich history and immense collectibles. They are becoming harder and harder to find and “the good ones” will continue to increase in value in the coming years. About 12,000 steel examples of this watch were produced from 1969 to 1988, just over 631 watches a year worldwide. How many of these watches are still available on the market today?
How many in original condition?

And most importantly , how many with the full set of perforated warranty?
We are talking about very few examples. If you have the budget, in my eyes there is no better Rolex to buy than the Daytona 6263.
There are icons among icons. It is fair to say that in the pantheon of greats, some watches reign supreme. The word iconic is widely abused in the watch industry, but the Daytona deserves it big time.
Even the current production steel Rolex Daytona with ceramic bezel ( ref. 116500LN), is strongly inspired by the design of the 6263, confirming how important it is to be No. 1.
The example we have here is an early edition of the Daytona 6263 that came to the American market in 1974. Amazingly, it arrives to the present day unpolished complete with a full kit containing the original box, perforated warranty and booklet. The watch mounts a stunning black sigma dial with silver lettering.
The Daytona 6263 is the watch of which the vintage dreams of Rolex enthusiasts are made; when such a special watch arrives, there is little time to hesitate.
