Rolex’s strength is that it renews without distorting. Every year, when Rolex announces the latest updates to its watch lines, the enthusiast community complains about minor updates and implores the brand to take more risks.
The watch we have here is a perfect example. This Daytona “Beach” yellow reference 116519 in white gold with a matching lizard skin strap could not be more brazen. It is an assault on tradition and a must-have for any die-hard Rolex collector.
Over the years, the DAYTONA has seen various updates and has become one of the most desired watch models in the world. Standard production steel models are traded for a substantial plus on the secondary market, and rare models like this one have become incredibly collectible.
This white gold example with a yellow mother-of-pearl dial was launched in the early 2000s as part of a special series limited not in number but in time of Daytona watches that would be dubbed Daytona “Beach.” The series consisted of four brightly colored models, two yellow and pink mother-of-pearl dials, a green hardstone dial, and blue turquoise.
Although it is obviously a special Daytona, this watch retains many of the traits that have made the Daytona a modern classic.
The curves of the case are elegant and timeless, the result of Rolex mercifully sparing the Daytona from the “super case” trend gives us hope for the future. However, although the case design is perfect, it is greatly overshadowed by the dial and strap. I think more people like this watch than one might think at first glance. Yes, it is incredibly arrogant and that lizard skin strap gives off an intense vibe, but in the end, this is still a rare white gold Rolex Daytona. It is objectively collectible and a must-have for any serious Rolex or Daytona enthusiast, regardless of personal style.
Each so-called Rolex Beach Daytona features a special pastel-tone colored “stone” Rolex dial and a matching lizard strap.
Rolex has made the Daytona 116519 “Beach” watches in four colors:
– Green Daytona Beach 116519
– Turquoise blue Daytona Beach 116519
– Pink Daytona Beach 116519
– Yellow Daytona Beach 116519
Regardless of dial color, all four variants share the following features:
– White gold Roman numeral hour markers.
– The rectangular hour markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are filled with black lacquer and not luminescence
– The original factory hands also had black lacquer instead of luminescence
The Yellow Beach Daytona 116519 presented has a special mother-of-pearl dial, nicknamed “Champagne Nacre” in Rolex catalogs. Again, the Yellow Beach has a matching yellow lizard strap. Another interesting feature of the Rolex Daytona Beach models is that they came with boxes and accessories (warranty wallet, box cover, etc.) of the same color and leather as the strap. So pink textured boxes for the pink Daytona Beach, yellow textured boxes for the yellow Daytona Beach, and so on.
This feature was lost after 2005 in the later examples. Rolex actively marketed these Daytona Beach watches to women, as illustrated by these two advertisements from the early 2000s. The one on the left explicitly says “It’s time to share the legend” with a female model in the photo, which classified it as no longer a purely male watch.
This one came with different length straps, in short the first unisex Daytona. There are many classic Daytona executions to choose from, and having some like the Daytona Beach watches that are a bit out of place for the conservative brand is never a bad thing. In fact, in the long run, the more eccentric items often become important collector’s pieces. As is often the case with “stone” dials, no two are ever the same, thanks to veining, nuances that nature has bestowed upon them.
This yellow Beach has very strong yellow-orange highlights that give it a very relevant additional charm.
